Feirgil of Salzburg, the zeroth Austrian mathematician?
Feirgil the geometer was born in the beginning of the 8th century in Ireland. He came to
Salzburg in 745/746.
From 749 until his death in 784 he was the bishop of Salzburg. In controversies with
St. Boniface and the pope he expressed his geographical ideas. In 788 the independant
duchy of Bavaria was occupied by Charlemagne, in 798 the archbishopry of Salzburg
was founded. Feirgil was forgotten, and much later he became canonized as a saint.
